Breaking free in his 67th year, Phil Moriarty (Gadflys, Mikelangelo & the Black Sea Gentlemen) has teamed up with some friends to present a bunch of fresh tunes. A pick-of-the-crop selection, part of a great burst of creativity flowing from a songwriting club he’s hosted at his NSW South Coast home over the last few years.

Driven by the rhythm section of erstwhile Praguian bachelor Russell Cook on drums and Novella fella, Myoung Jae Yi on bass. Finessed with blowtorch subtlety by Andy Zarins on multifarious keyboard thingamajigs. Caressed by the lugubrious saxophone legato of Tabitha Bilaniwskyj-Zarins. Phil Moriarty bashing away on guitar and squeezing out some suavely savage vocals.

Songs of fear & loathing, bitterness & bile, with the occasional chirpy piece of warped optimism and thwarted desire thrown in for good measure. Wrack & Ruin value an admixture of strong rhythms and Motownesque harmonies. Disinclined to tour, they regard themselves as a one pub band, only to be experienced at Cliff Wallis’ Tathra Hotel. “We like a sea view” says Moriarty. Until now that is, with the imminent release of their first album, The Beat Takes Over.
